2nd tutorial: heat bag covers

Its always nice to havea cover on the heat bag so it can be washed!

Again we'll ahve to play match the blurb to the picture...here it goes...M

First I cut a long recatngle of material ( I chose flannel so it would feel soft against the skin)

Then I hemmed each end and turned it into itself, so that when it was finished I could turn it right side out again and have an envelope.

Then I sewed down the two sides

And voila I turned it rigth side out and popped the heat bag into it.

You can use this same idea to make really quick and easy thorw cushion covers.

My first tutorial: heat bags

This is my first tutorial so be sure to tell me where I stop making sense!

What I'm doing is making heat bags for the microwave. I made one large one for neck, back etc...and 2 mini ones for a nursing mom to put on her breasts before feeding if she has a blocked duct etc.M

First I took 2 scraps of material and sewed 3 of the nice sides together facing each other.

Then I turned it right side out and put about 3/4 cup of pearl barley into it.

I folded the open end in to itself and sewed alon that side to seal it.

Silver Star Chair Covers

I love these because they are so pretty and were a breeze to whip up. I traced the back of one chair onto a big piece of paper and used that as a pattern. Hem the bottom and sew around the edges, leaving the bottom open and voila- pretty halloween chair covers.

Fairy Bag

Here is my latest bag. It is very similar to the work bag I made for myself and was made for Univeristy student to carry books and things to school. She picked the fabrics and said she liked fairies so I tried the stencil for her for the front.

And a zipper shot, because I thought the light blue looked so pretty against the grey

Halloween + Felt Pt II

Our halloween tree. A little out of context in this photo, but imagine it in a bay window with some ghosts hanging above it and jack o'latterns surrounding it, it looks pretty cool.

Here is a close-up of the ornaments on it:

I used some of that green foamy stuff for flower arrangements in a tin pot, covered the foam with the fake cobweb material (which got a bit mussed up by a toddler who tried to EAT it) and then tied a halloween ribbon around. For that country touch?? Actually I am not sure why I did that, perhaps I am getting brainwashed by craft magazines.

My First Stencil

Definitely going to be a new technique of mine.

I made the stencil from a silhouette from dover publication's last sampler and then used a pearly acryllic paint.

Felt + Halloween, Pt I

Door decoration

and the easiest feltboard ever, but sure to please a 2 year old.

Spider halloween Costume

We finished off brodies halloween costume today. We bought the spider part at Winners but it didn't come with anything to put on his head which I thought was silly! So I sewed a balaclava out of black fleece, then made the eyes out of felt and sewed them on. He's pretty happy with it!

When I wsa making it I realized that the balaclava could make all kinds of quick costumes. Just another colour of fleece and you could have a frog, or a bee, or turtle or or or....really anything! I really like the idea for trick or treating outside in our cold weather. His ears, neck and head will be super cozy while we're out walking around.

I made one balaclava that was too small for him so I am going to turn that one into a bee hat for Cooper with antennae on it.

Custom lunchbox

Brodies Bob the Builder lunchbox broke ages ago and I finally got around to getting him another one tonight. I was at Michaels and saw they had plain ones so I grabbed a white one and a package of stickers. This will also be known as the 30 second craft haha. The hardest part was getting the package of stickers opened! M

Brown Bear feltboard

I just finished this feltboard for nursery school. It's for the book Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do you See? If you've read the book you will notice the purple cat is missing (no purple felt so that is tomorrow!) You might also notice the gorilla....well turns out depending on which copy of the book you are looking at it changes a bit. The pictures are different and in one version it's a gorilla and in another it's a teacher! so I did both. Hope the kids at nursery school enjoy it! M

Edited to add: I wasn't happy with some of the animals so I added a collar to the dog, redid the monkey/gorilla and the blue horse and finally got purple felt to do the cat.

Embroidered Hoodie

I made this for a friend's 3 year old

Snowball's Chance in Hell

People are finding this site when searching for arm cozies and instead finding my attempt at a thermos cozy, so I thought I would share a link to a pattern for my favourite arm warmers:

Wonder pet cape

Brodie loves the Wonderpets so we threw this cape together on Wednesday. Some scrap material hemmed with a ribbon for a neck tie, then we made the Wonderpet emblem out of felt and sewed that on too. He loves it! M

I Hurt My Crafting Hand

seriously, my right hand cramps up if I try to hold a pen, embroidery needle or knitting needle. I hope it is better before this pattern I ordered comes in:

I also really like this one. I could probably make up my own, but with a pattern I might actually get around to doing it.

I only WISH I was ambitious enough for this one:

PS Tim showed me how to make pictures you click for links!

Work Bag

I needed a new bag for work and made this today. The black fabric is from an old set of sheets that I made into curtains in my first apartment (in 1995!), the red is a remnant I bought, the white with red flowers is scavenged from a pouch melissa gave me and anyone who reads the blog will recognize the red riding hood print. I made it large enough to hold lots of goodies- books, embroidery bag and notebooks, oh my!

Thermos Cozy

I knitted a cozy for my thermos but it's a bit too loose.

I am going to reknit the cozy, and then knit an identical sleeve to this one to wear as arm cozies with my t-shirts in the winter. I never really got arm warmers before but it's actually quite soft and warm to wear.

These and a boombox

I totally remember driving to Mexico with my family (4 day drive) when I was in grade 6. I had a big ghetto blaster on my lap and supersized headphones like these on. I sang "Pour Some Sugar On Me" by Def Leppard the whole way there. I'm not kidding. The whole way. How my parents didn't leave me by the side of the road I don't know!

This is baby gift for an old tennis buddy who's wife just had a baby boy. The pattern was from Sublime Stitching www.sublimestitching.com I could order every single one of her patterns :)
